Assessing High-Impact Practices for Quality and Equity: Centering Racially Minoritized Student Experiences

February 4, 2021 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

Virtual Event Virtual Event

High-impact practices (HIPs) represent a key feature of many undergraduate programs. Yet with popularity comes a rise in labeling many things HIPs, sometimes with insufficient attention to quality of implementation and to what makes longstanding practices such as learning communities, undergraduate research, internships, and culminating experiences so transformative. Ensuring that HIPs deliver equally transformative benefits for racially minoritized students and that all students have access to HIPs that are high-quality experiences are critical equity considerations. This session shares recent findings about the twin concerns of quality and equity to examine the extent to which students are exposed to the eight HIP qualities and to explore variation by racial identity groups. This assessment approach and results can inform efforts to strengthen HIPs, identify shortcomings, and consider quality from the perspective of racially minoritized students in HIPs.
