From RISE to the Challenge to Engaged Learning: IUPUI’s Sustained Efforts to Promote Equitable Access to Experiential and Applied Learning
In this session, Dr. Jennifer Thorington Springer and Dr. Jerry Daday will discuss IUPUI’s journey to create and promote experiential and applied learning opportunities for among their 20,000 undergraduate students in Indianapolis. RISE to the Challenge was a campus level effort to promote undergraduate research (R), internationalization (I), service learning and community engagement (S), and internships and other forms of experiential learning (E). The campus set a goal for students to complete two of these experiences during their undergraduate experience.
In 2018, IUPUI created and launched the Institute for Engaged Learning, with the mission/goal of ensuring students have equitable access to at least 4 experiential and applied learning opportunities, especially those from traditionally underserved backgrounds. The presenters will share lessons learned and participate in a Q&A session.
Dr. Jennifer Thorington Springer is a Professor of English and the Associate Dean of Student Affairs in the School of Liberal Arts at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). She is the former Director of the IUPUI RISE Program.
Dr. Jerry Daday is a Professor of Sociology and the Executive Associate Dean in the Institute for Engaged Learning at IUPUI.
