Proactive Practices: Using Canvas & CARE to Support Students Experiencing Distress

Join Ashley O’Donnell from Dean of Students Office and Shannon Barr from ITS Learning Technology to discuss leveraging campus resources and tools to support students who are experiencing life stressors that impact their student experience, but in a way that is more sustainable and within scope of practice for faculty. Ashley will share about the CARE Team, an interdisciplinary team of campus staff who provide triage support for students experiencing stressors. Shannon will share more information about using the tools in Canvas to extend and manage the academic flexibilities that students may benefit from when navigating life stressors.
In this session, we will:
- Introduce the CARE Team and explain their role in providing student support
- Explain how you can contact the CARE team with a concern about a student
- Share the CARE team outreach process and how the CARE Team supports students
- Provide a brief overview of concerning academic or non-academic behaviors and how to utilize Canvas to recognize academic disengagement
- Do a Canvas demonstration of:
- Reopening and extending assignments
- Removing late penalties and excusing assignments/attendance
- Requesting extended student access to Canvas for an Incomplete
- Time allowing, review using Microsoft Education tool to record classroom lectures using Teams Meetings
