October 4th, 11am “Building Instructor Presence in Canvas” by Audrey Bryk-Lee
Presence is an essential component of asynchronous online courses, improving student learning, satisfaction, and sense of belonging. In the absence of presence, the course can feel transactional – the instructor adds content to Canvas and students submit assignments for grading. This session will introduce the Community of Inquiry framework and provide five simple, concrete methods for building instructor presence in Canvas. Incorporating these strategies can help replace what sometimes is lost when a course moves online, without sacrificing the flexibility that asynchronous learning provides.
